V6.0-001 brings useful new enhancements

V6.0-001 brings a number of useful enhancements to GT.M. For example:

An environment variable to provide an initial value to $ETRAP at process startup, overriding the default $ZTRAP="B", which in the event of a buggy application error trap can drop the process to direct mode, undesirable behavior in production
Significantly speed-up a common type of indirection, of the form @x@(), where the subscripts vary with each invocation
For the symmetric cipher, demonstrating support in the encryption plugin for both libgcrypt and OpenSSL, and with the latter, a choice of AES CFB and Blowfish CFB as the cipher
On Linux, an option to use huge pages, for those applications that can benefit from a significant reduction in the use of virtual memory page tables
The new MUPIP SIZE command with a choice of techniques to rapidly estimate global variable size
For application code that uses, or may use, side-effects in ways where order of evaluation matters, an option to direct the compiler to generate object code with strict left to right evaluation, bypassing certain optimizations that can reorder evaluation
New functionality in utility programs, for example, the LOOP^%XCMD entryref to facilitate filters in GT.M, where one might otherwise use the UNIX awk utility
A new $ZWRITE() function to return a string with non-graphic characters represented in the $CHAR() format produced by the ZWRITE command

There are numerous other enhancements, improvements to ease of use and robustness, and bug fixes as detailed in therelease notes.

V6.0-000 significantly extends database file limits:

- The maximum supported key size increases from 255 to 1,019 bytes.
- Global variable nodes need no longer fit within a database block. This
opens opportunities for applications to consider smaller block sizes where
these improve performance. Also, the new maximum global variable node size
of 1,048,576 bytes (1 MiB) means that any local variable node can also be
stored in a global variable.
- The maximum size of a database file is now 1,040,187,392 (992 Mi) blocks.
Previously this limit was 234,881,024 (224 Mi) blocks.

For operations, MUPIP REORG TRUNCATE now reclaims and frees additional types of unused space from database files. The IO impact of MUPIP INTEG FAST has been reduced, which should speed it up in many cases.

A new development for the client and the database GT.M in Linux!!! This is a studio with the tools for editing programs and globals. Server API GT.M (Linux), the client is written in Gambas (Linux). In the near future will be added to the import utility to Export- routin and globals (server, client) etc.

V5.5-000 brings two major new enhancements to GT.M.

A new type of replication, Supplementary Instance (SI)
replication, allows replication to a supplementary instance which can
execute its own business logic and commit database updates, to provide
reporting, decision support, data warehousing, auditing, and more -
all in real time. A technical bulletin is at

MUPIP REORG now has a TRUNCATE option, to return unused space at
the end of a database file to the host file system, after operations
such as data archival - even while the database continues in active
use.

There are other noteworthy enhancements as well, for example:

A framework to allow GT.M to be extended with plugins, whether
from FIS or others. In parallel with this release, FIS is providing a
sample plugin which wraps zlib (http://zlib.net) to compress strings
in M code.

Routine invocations using DO no longer require empty parentheses
for calls with no actuallist. This change also improves the
performance of routine invocation.

The encryption reference plug-in supports a method to employ if
key management requires the ability to pass an obfuscated password
between unrelated processes, or even from one system to another.

As usual, the release includes many smaller improvements and

There is a fix to a bug exposed by VistA. While the application code
from the VistA Surgery package that exposed the bug was unnecessarily
convoluted and easily replaced with more readable code, it was legal
code and reliably produced a segmentation violation in V5.4-002B.
From the release notes, the relevant entry is:

GT.M now handles nesting of XECUTE strings that contain
subscripted FOR control variables. In V5.4-002x such constructs could
result in a memory segmentation violation (UNIX SIG-11 or OpenVMS
ACCVIO). (GTM-7007)

We are now able to publish GT.M manuals in four formats from the same
content "source code":

html - Designed to work with most graphical and text browsers.
Optionally, with access to the Internet and JavaScript enabled,
provides a Google search tool to search within the manual.

webhelp - Requires a graphical browser with JavaScript enabled,
and provides the ability to search within the document without
Internet access.

screen pdf - a PDF format file optimized for reading on a screen,
such as a table

print pdf - a PDF format optimized for printing
